Patios & Landscaping in Ripley

Proper groundwork for Amber Valley gardens.

Ripley sits in the middle of our northern patch, an easy run up the A38 from Derby, and we work across the town and the villages around it: Marehay, Waingroves, Butterley, Codnor and out towards Heage and Denby.

The housing is mixed, from Victorian terraces built for the pits and the ironworks to post-war estates and newer developments on the edges of town. Each one asks something different of a garden.

What Amber Valley ground does to a patio

The ground around Ripley is old industrial land in places and heavy clay in most of the rest. Both move if you build on them carelessly. We excavate to a proper depth, compact the sub-base in layers rather than tipping it in one go, and bed every slab on a full mortar bed instead of five dabs.

It is the part of the job nobody sees and the only part that decides whether the patio is still flat in ten years.

Levels, steps and retaining

Ripley gardens rise and fall. A lot of the work here involves holding one part of the garden back so another part can be flat and usable, which means retaining walls with real foundations and drainage behind them, and steps with even risers that are safe when they are wet.

We design the walls, steps and paving as one job, so the finished garden reads as a whole rather than a patio with things added round it.

The full garden, not just the paving

As well as patios we build railway sleeper raised beds and retaining walls, lay premium artificial grass and real turf, and take on brickwork and complete garden makeovers with the same in-house team.

If you are changing more than the paving, it is worth pricing the whole thing as one job so the levels, walls and planting line up instead of fighting each other.

Ripley Questions, Answered

No. Ripley is inside our normal patch, a straight run up the A38, and the same goes for Marehay, Waingroves, Butterley, Codnor, Heage and Denby. Travel is not added to the quote.

Sometimes. If the old base is solid, level and drains away from the house, laying over it saves you time and money. More often the falls are wrong or there is movement in it, in which case we lift it and start properly. We will tell you which applies after looking at it, not before.

The whole garden. Patios, paths, steps, retaining walls, sleeper beds, brickwork, turf and artificial grass, all with one team. Most of our Amber Valley work ends up being a makeover rather than a patio on its own.
