Most fences that fail in Derbyshire fail at ground level. The panel is sound, the rails are fine, and the post has rotted through where it meets wet soil, or it was driven into the ground rather than concreted and has worked loose in a winter gale. That is why we set posts in concrete and fit concrete gravel boards on almost every job. It costs a little more on day one and it is the single biggest factor in whether the fence is still standing straight in fifteen years.
Horizontal slatted fencing has become the most requested style we fit, and it suits modern Derby housing particularly well. It reads as a clean architectural boundary rather than a stack of panels, it makes a small garden feel wider, and with a decent gap between slats it lets wind through instead of catching it like a sail. We build the runs to a consistent slat gap and keep the tops level across the whole boundary, which is the detail that separates a fitted fence from a bought one.
Composite is worth a serious look if you are tired of treating timber every other spring. It does not rot, does not need staining, and will not silver off in the sun the way softwood does. The trade-off is cost and a slightly more uniform appearance than natural timber. We fit both and have no preference either way, so ask us what we would put in our own garden and you will get a straight answer rather than whichever carries the better margin.

It depends how long you plan to stay. Composite costs noticeably more up front but needs no treating, will not rot or warp, and holds its colour for decades. Timber is cheaper to install and looks superb when new, but wants re-treating every couple of years to stay that way. If you want to fit it and forget it, composite pays for itself; if you enjoy maintaining a garden, good treated timber is hard to beat on value.
Yes, and it is worth doing properly. On a slope a fence is either stepped, where each panel sits level and the tops form a staircase, or raked, where the panels follow the gradient. Stepped suits most Derbyshire gardens and looks tidier; raked needs bespoke panels. We will walk the boundary with you and show you which will look right before anything is ordered.
If the fence sits on the boundary it is courteous and usually sensible to speak to them first, particularly if we need access from their side to fit it. Your deeds will normally show which boundary is yours to maintain. We are happy to work from one side only where access is a problem, though it can affect how the finished fence looks from each garden.
A typical garden boundary of 15 to 20 metres is a one to two day job including taking the old one away. If posts need concreting we will usually let them set before hanging panels, so allow an extra day. We clear and dispose of the old fence as part of the price rather than leaving it stacked in your garden.
Concrete, into a dug hole rather than driven in, with the depth set by the fence height. We use concrete posts and gravel boards on most jobs because the base of a timber post is where rot always starts, and keeping the panel clear of wet ground is what makes the difference between a fence lasting eight years and twenty.
