A new-build garden usually looks like the easiest job on the street and rarely is. The topsoil is often a thin layer over subsoil that has been driven over by plant for months, so it is compacted solid and drains like a road. Turf laid straight onto it never establishes and paving laid straight onto it settles.
We dig out to a proper depth, break up and compact a real stone sub-base, and get the falls right before anything is laid. It is why our quote sometimes looks higher than the one that promised to start on Monday.
Most Chellaston houses are recent, and porcelain tends to suit them: flat, uniform, low maintenance, and easy to keep looking sharp next to render, grey frames and bifold doors. It costs more per square metre and it is fussier to lay, but on the right house it looks the part for years.
Where a garden wants something warmer, Indian sandstone still earns its place, and mixing the two, porcelain by the doors and sandstone paths beyond, works better than people expect.
The ground drops away south of Chellaston towards Shelton Lock and the Trent, and the lower plots hold water after heavy rain. Every patio we build gets a fall that carries water away from the house, and where the garden has nowhere to send it we add a channel drain or a soakaway.
The same rule applies before artificial grass goes down. A drainage layer and a compacted base are what stop a plastic lawn behaving like a bath mat in February.

Usually, yes, and it is worth knowing before you compare quotes. Builders leave subsoil compacted by machinery under a thin skim of topsoil, so there is more digging out and more base work before anything can be laid. A quote that skips that stage is cheaper because it is doing less, and you find out which the following winter.
Porcelain suits most of the modern houses here, stays uniform and needs almost no upkeep. Sandstone is warmer, costs less per slab and ages naturally, which suits the older properties around the village. We bring both to the house so you can see them against your own brick and doors.
